The Ministry of Textiles has launched Kapas Kisan, a
farmer-centric mobile application developed by the Cotton Corporation of India.
The app is designed to streamline Minimum Support Price (MSP) procurement and
digitize key touchpoints from registration to payment tracking. It now enables
cotton growers to self-register, book slots at procurement centres, monitor
quality assessment results, and verify payment status in real time. Available
in multiple Indian languages, the app is a direct response to challenges faced
by farmers during procurement most notably in long queues, paperwork delays,
and distress sales.
Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, noted that
Kapas Kisan aligns with the broader Digital India mission aimed at injecting
transparency into the system. The app is expected to reduce manual
intervention, improve crowd management at procurement centres, and
significantly enhance planning efficiency by allowing farmers to choose their
preferred slots. This digital shift also contributes to securing MSP operations
and safeguarding farmer income.
Cotton is a cornerstone of India’s textile economy,
employing over 6 million farmers and contributing heavily to raw material
supply. Enhancing MSP procurement can buffer farmers from price volatility and
ensure a steady flow of quality cotton into supply chains. The Kapas Kisan app
marks a move toward data-driven, farmer-friendly systems that reinforce rural
resilience while supporting textile value chains with timely, transparent
cotton sourcing.
