“Mera Resham Mera Abhimaan” Campaign Registers Strong Momentum Across India’s Silk Sector

The Central Silk Board (CSB), under the Ministry of Textiles, has reported sizeable engagement through its flagship sericulture initiative Mera Resham Mera Abhimaan (MRMA), which seeks to inject modern technology into silk production and boost livelihoods in rural India. According to campaign figures, 518 awareness programmes have been carried out nationally, alongside 468 field demonstrations and visits, and 371 training sessions.

MRMA targets the full value-chain of sericulture from mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing to weaving and processing. A recent CSB release noted improved participation of women farmers and smallholders, particularly across northeastern states and premium silk belts. Analytics from the campaign indicate that effective technology transfer is generating higher quality cocoons, reduced wastage and improved yields per unit area though exact yield metrics have not been publicly disclosed.

The campaign has already awarded states: Andhra Pradesh recently received the “Best State Award” under MRMA for its performance in awareness creation and farmer engagement. MRMA’s outcomes aim to align with India’s goal of expanding its silk production capacity, currently standing at roughly 32 % of global raw-silk output, and reducing dependence on imports.

Notably, if MRMA’s scale-up is sustained it could boost employment, strengthen rural incomes and support India’s ambition to emerge as a premium silk manufacturing hub. The CSB plans to monitor metrics such as cocoon yield per hectare, reelable silk output and farmer income trajectories as part of its next phase of reporting.
