The R|Elan Circular Design Challenge (CDC), supported by
United Nations in India and Lakmé Fashion Week, is an attempt to build a
fashion model based on circularity and responsibility. CDC supports young
designers working on material innovation and system-led design.
This year, Chennai-based menswear label CRCLE won the
challenge and earned a showcase at Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI. CRCLE focuses on
circularity beyond the life of a garment. The brand creates modern essentials
using craft, texture and strong material choices.
The brand works with over 100 artisans and more than 50
craft communities across India. Its material library includes naturally dyed
Weganool, handwoven Korai grass, cotton from Chennimalai, and deadstock cotton
from Tirupur. It also uses leather offcuts, handcrafted metal buttons from
Kutch, and repurposed steel elements. In just 18 months, CRCLE has recycled
over 400 kilograms of textile waste. It has also helped generate 5,800 litres
of Aarka, supporting soil health and farmers in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
At the showcase, CRCLE presented its collection ‘DIALOGUE’.
The collection explores the link between material, maker and wearer. It focuses
on texture, durability and thoughtful construction. The designs are made to
last and adapt beyond seasons.
Founder Varshne said the collection aims to rebuild
connections in fashion. She highlighted a shift away from fast production
towards more intentional design.
In 2026, the challenge expands further with an Indo-French
edition. This step strengthens international collaboration in sustainable
fashion.
