India is going big on
exports. The target is clear - US$ 2 trillion by 2030. And the push has begun.
Union Commerce and Industry
Minister Piyush Goyal has called for an all-out effort to scale India’s global
trade footprint. The message is simple: move faster, export more, compete
harder.
At a high-level meeting
with 30 Export Promotion Councils (EPCs), industry bodies, and senior officials
at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, held right after the India-New Zealand FTA
signing, Goyal laid out a sharp, execution-focused roadmap in a rapidly changing
global trade environment.
The starting point is
strong. India’s exports touched a record US$ 860.09 billion in FY 2025–26,
growing 4.22% despite global disruptions. Core sectors - engineering goods,
electronics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, gems and jewellery, and agri-products
- are holding momentum.
Now comes the next leap.
Goyal urged exporters to fully utilise FTAs with developed markets. The goal:
unlock demand, expand market access, and create jobs.
On the ground, reforms are
getting sharper. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has rolled out
a results-driven blueprint. A KPI-based framework for EPCs. Faster e-commerce
exports. Districts as Export Hubs. A proposed Digital Trade Academy. And
quicker clearance of Export Obligation Discharge Certificates (EODC).
There is also a calibrated
response to global disruptions, including the West Asia crisis, backed by the
Export Promotion Mission.
The directive is clear.
EPCs are not just facilitators, they are partners. They must drive market
diversification, bring more MSMEs into exports, adopt technology, and deliver
measurable results.
India is creating the
momentum. In the past few years nine free trade agreements have been signed
spanning 38 developed countries. More are in the offing. It’s now time to
leverage the opportunities.
