India's viscose filament yarn market has nearly doubled over
the past decade, driven by rising demand for premium ethnic wear, according to
Shailendra Pandey, Joint President, Marketing and Business Development, VFY,
Grasim Industries. Speaking to Textile Excellence at Bharat Tex 2026 in
Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, Pandey said domestic consumption has increased from
nearly 60,000 tonnes in 2017 to around 110,000 tonnes, reflecting growing
consumer preference for natural origin fibres offering superior drape, softness
and comfort.
Grasim, India's only viscose filament yarn producer,
currently operates an annual capacity of around 50,000 tonnes and plans phased
capacity expansion to meet future demand. Pandey noted that low priced imports,
particularly from China, continue to challenge domestic manufacturers despite
robust market growth. He also highlighted the company's progress in developing
Lyocell filament yarn, a next generation sustainable fibre offering higher
strength and improved processing performance. Grasim has successfully completed
laboratory development and is now establishing a pilot facility, reinforcing
its commitment to innovation, sustainability and advanced fibre technologies.
