Global apparel retailer UNIQLO has launched a pilot
garment collection programme in mainland China in partnership with textile
recycling platform FeimaYi, marking another milestone in its global circular
fashion strategy. The RE.UNIQLO initiative enables customers to return unwanted
garments from UNIQLO, GU and Theory at four flagship stores in Shanghai,
Guangzhou and Changsha for recycling and resource recovery.
FeimaYi will sort collected garments according to fibre
composition, including cotton, polyester, nylon and blended materials,
supporting fibre to fibre recycling and alternative material recovery. Textiles
unsuitable for fibre recycling will be repurposed into insulation materials,
agricultural blankets and industrial cleaning cloths.
The programme complements RE.UNIQLO Studio repair
services already operating in China and strengthens Fast Retailing's circular
business model. China generates more than 26 million tonnes of discarded
clothing annually, making textile recycling a strategic priority. Industry
observers believe the initiative could accelerate commercial scale textile
circularity while supporting innovation in post-consumer fibre recycling across
one of the world's largest apparel manufacturing and consumption markets.
