France has taken a decisive step against ultra-fast
fashion after Parliament approved legislation that will ban advertising by
platforms such as Shein, Temu and AliExpress from January 2027. The measure
positions France among the first countries to directly target aggressive
promotion of ultra-fast fashion, reflecting growing concerns over environmental
impact and unsustainable consumption.
The legislation also prohibits influencers from
promoting ultra-fast fashion brands, with financial penalties planned for
violations. The move supports France's broader strategy to encourage
responsible consumption, reduce textile waste and strengthen the circular
economy. According to the European Environment Agency, textiles rank among the
top four sources of environmental pressure in Europe, while the EU generates
around 12.6 million tonnes of textile waste annually.
Industry observers believe the law could influence
similar regulatory action across Europe, creating tougher compliance
requirements for global ecommerce fashion platforms while encouraging greater
transparency, sustainability and responsible marketing across the textile and
apparel value chain.
